Film description

Very recently, the centre of the world's best horrors has shifted from Japan to Europe, where Scandinavia slowly takes over the rank after some successes of Spanish cinematography. This process is confirmed by Tomas Alfredson's Let the Right One in - a story about the 12-year-old Oskar, shy and bullied by his peers, who makes friends with a strange, mysterious girl from the neighbourhood.

Alfredson doesn't apply simple methods of making spectators scared, instead, he provides us with a subtle image of the loneliness of men (and not only men). He follows the path set by Werner Herzog and Neil Jordan who showed vampires as suffering entities, excluded from the world, condemned to loneliness and struggling with their vampire nature.

In Let the Right One in, there are as few supernatural elements as possible. Alfredson gradually introduces eeriness, but only to the necessary extent. But he uses the meanings associated with the winter landscape, an excellent reflection of cold interpersonal relations. Because this is a film about people, their alienation, confusion and their desire to understand. The stylisation of the genre is just an attractive veil, covering the sad truth about the contemporary world.
