Film description

An ordinary guy cannot cope with his wife's death. There was a burglary; he was hit on the head, she was strangled. He wants to take revenge; he starts a private investigation. There is only one problem: he suffers from loss of short-term memory and keeps forgetting everything.

Memento is one of the most brilliant narratives of American cinematography. Audiences even went to cinemas five times to understand Nolan's puzzle; students at directing faculties reedited the film to get to the bottom of the scenes' structure; film theorists wrote essays to analyse the work's perception in a cognitive perspective. Time goes in many directions here, colourful frames are intertwined with sepia-toned ones; the entire sense of the whole film is focused in the first frame as in a lens and the viewer is thrown right into the middle of the plot. But Memento wasn't made just for the sake of art; above all this is an attempt to reflect the main character's perception. In the poignant scene near the end of the film, he says: I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still here. Is it still out there? Yeah.

Nolan has made an unprecedented film: George Berkeley's solipsism in a film noir. Perfect material for a nice evening and for intellectual analysis as well.
