Film description

Vive l'amour is set in a flat for sale - elegant, empty and deserted. This is the place where the fates of the characters intertwine: Hsiao-kang, who sells places for urns at a columbarium, May Lin, a real estate agent and Ah-jung who sells clothes in the street. May Lin sleeps here with Ah-jung, whom she hardly knows and the two men, who have nowhere to go, live here. The tragedy of those isolated characters is limited to the isolated space, which becomes unreal and turns into internal space.

Tsai returns to the issue of inability to communicate - the characters do not talk to each other, they cannot express their desires and longings. They are trapped, close to each other but not together, unaware of the closeness, always unwanted and unneeded like the products they offer. They are so far from each other and yet observing them in their most intimate moments, the spectator is as close to them as possible. The director is consistently faithful to his rigid style with static frames. And the extraordinary strength of emotions does burst, as in the moving and exhausting finale when May Lin cannot stop crying. Her endless weeping symbolises Tsai's pessimism, this is a sign of impossibility of catharsis.
