Film description

Poppy teaches at a primary school. She makes masks with children and she herself has the greatest fun with it. She intervenes when she finds out that one of her pupils is battered. After hours, she roams London, a broad smile on her face, she learns flamenco and she clubs all night long. When she starts driving lessons, it turns out that her instructor is a psychopathic frustrate: a personification of everything she tries to avoid.

With Mike Leigh one has got accustomed to the uncertainty of what to think about the characters. The same goes for this film, although Poppy is very different from the likeable losers we have met in previous features by the British director. The superficiality of the plot is entirely compensated with the congenial performance by Sally Hawkins, the intense opposition between Poppy and Scott and above all by the powerful dose of positive energy.
