Photography Is a Tough Craft
dir. Andrzej Barański / Poland 1998 / 55’
subtitles: English
Special Screenings

Film description

The film was based on a column by Stanisław Czycz in the weekly Przekrój, published under the pseudonym Michał C. Non-Professional Photographer. This was a parody of a hobby column and a photographer's guide, in which the author commented on the worst photos he could find, ill-composed or ill-lighted. With this material, he pretended to be a teacher and gave advice on photography. While making the film, Andrzej Barański did not stick to the stiff screenplay. With Czycz's photos and a filming crew, he travelled throughout Poland, hoping to encounter situations reminiscent of those on the photos. We drove in one car, a minibus with all the crew and equipment inside. We didn't know where we were going, no documentation was prepared in advance. Only in the car did I decide whether to go south, north or elsewhere - the director remembers. We depended entirely on what reality offered to us - he adds. The result is a film based on improvisation, close to the style of Czycz himself. A funny, self-centred film about the act of creation itself.
