Film description

In the cinema from down under, nature is not only a colourful background for events shown on the screen, but it often becomes the main character of the tragedy, with its merciless impact on human life, like in Peter Weir's The Last Wave (1977). The same goes for The Long Weekend, based on a screenplay by the thriller master Everett De Roche. We follow a quarrelling married couple, Peter and Marcia, who decide to go on a trip to the woods for the long weekend. But the idyllic nature they dreamt of soon changes into hell, when animals attack people. Why does nature react in such an astonishing way to the arrival of the intruders? The answer lies in the characters' dark past.

Often, the border between the mainstream of the Australian New Wave and ozploitation films was very thin. Many ambitious cinema directors, such as Bruce Beresford or Simon Wincer, started with ozploitation works and even later, when producing mainstream films, they used the same poetics. Colin Eggleston's film is an example of such ambitious ozploitation. This unnerving thriller with many surprising scenes reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds is not devoid of philosophical reflections on the origins of evil.

Night and the City by Jules Dassin was specifically selected for the ENH festival by Almodóvar. This film inspired the Spanish master during his work on Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos).
