Film description

Heaven's Heart by Simon Staho was presented at last year's IFF in Berlin. It is rooted in the traditions of the Swedish culture. The film touches upon issues of the decay of marital bonds, and you cannot help associating it with Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage and to some extent with the short stories by August Strindberg, Married. And yet the director of the Heaven's Heart, unlike the author of Persona, shows two couples on the verge of a marital crisis. The story begins with the scene of a divorce of Lars and Susanne, and then, in retrospective, we watch the development of the crisis in two befriended couples.

Staho chose a low-key form to present marital problems. The composition of frames, many close-ups and slight close-ups, limited camera movement - all these techniques help the spectator identify with the characters' tragedy. The final shape is more like a piece of theatre than a film. This formal purism is excellent for the narrative and it reflects the internal states of the characters.
