Film description

Castaing-Taylor's camera looks longingly at the world of simple ranchers who travel hundreds of miles with their sheep. What do those modern cowboys have that smug intellectuals might envy - freedom, inner balance or metaphysical tranquillity? Deprived of the author's commentary, Sweetgrass is not easily understandable for the viewer. The movie consists of a series of static scenes, the most important of which seems to be the long one, where the sheep are sheared. Taking off the animals' 'overcoat' might be compared to the process which the viewer will be submitted to during the screening. To fully enjoy the meditative air of following frames, and understand the nature presented, one should cast away the mask that civilization brings upon. But, are we able to do that? This is one of multiple questions the viewer will ask himself after watching Sweetgrass.
