Noam Gonick made a documentary about the work on the Twilight of the Ice Nymphs - the film expected to open a new, colourful chapter in Maddin's career which actually brought a series of disappointments for the director and several years of artistic crisis. Gonick discussed Maddin's art with different people, including collaborators who accompanied the director on his first projects - George Toles, Steve Snyder and Greg Klymkiw. The film is narrated by Tom Waits.

Manuelle Labor

USA 2007 / 10’

director:Marie Losier, Guy Maddin
screenplay:Marie Losier
cinematography:Mary Billyou
editing:Mary Billyou
cast:Juliana Francis, Marie Losier
producer:Marie Losier

When the artist Marie Losier offered to make his film portrait, Guy Maddin refused, but he sent to her a film with his hands, recorded during the work on Odin's Shield Maiden (2007) (I played the entire Caprice by Paganini with my fingers). Losier used this sequence in her short feature, whose style refers to Maddin's art. The carefree life of two sisters is interrupted by a suspicious disorder...

Barber Gull Rub

Canada 2007 / 2'30’

director:Guy Maddin
screenplay:Guy Maddin
cast:Darcy Fehr
editing:Guy Maddin
production:Winnipeg Film Group
sales:Winnipeg Film Group

A short pseudo-documentary devoted to a memorable scene in the Tales from the Gimli Hospital - rubbing a patient's belly with a dead seagull (as Maddin admits - 'borrowed' from Buñuel's The Forgotten Ones - Los Olvidados). Guy Maddin is played by Darcy Fehr, who performed the same role in Cowards Bend the Knee and My Winnipeg.

cast:Guy Maddin, John Gurdebeke, Jaime Hook, Benjamin Kasulke, Jason Staczek, George Toles

An interview with Guy Maddin, supplemented with fragments of films. Maddin speaks mainly about Brand Upon the Brain! (the film was made as an addition to the DVD version of this piece), but he returns to his previous films as well, talking about his film and literary inspirations, mentioning a family anecdote. George Toles, John Gurdebeke, Jason Staczek, Jamie Hook, and Benjamin Kasulke speak about their cooperation with Maddin.
