Film description

The first of two feature-length films by Zoltán Huszárik - one of the greatest poets of European cinema. In Sindbad, a visually and formally sophisticated adaptation of a novel by Gyula Krúdy, Huszárik tells the story of a man who devoted his energy to enjoying his life with reflective melancholy - not in the name of hedonism, but admiration of fragility and volatility of human existence. The main character, like Sindbad, sailed from one lover to another, as an aesthete he relished art, as an aristocrat of sensitive palate he tasted the most refined dishes and alcohols. Huszárik made a charming version of In Search of the Time Lost, mixing chronology, making it difficult to identify the film's narrator, but above all showing how elusive our life is, how short-lasted our feelings are: although in the evening we want to commit suicide for them, in the morning they deserve only a short sigh. Huszárik painted a landscape of pre-communist Hungary, accentuating the beauty of this world and its decadence as well, the growing melancholy and fear of an imminent end. The atmosphere of nostalgia and resignation is matched by the film's loose narration, a composition of scenes some of which are charmingly ironical, some - full of wisdom and reflection.
