Film description

I believe that the stories of my films can all be told in two sentences. Like in The Skywalk Is Gone: Lee Kang-sheng and Chen Shiang-chyi walk past each other but don't recognize each other. That's it - the director said. In this short film (a sequel to What Time is it There?) the director waives the plot. The scenes focus around the alienated and melancholic Shiang-chyi. Motionless in a crowd, she is staring at commercials on a street screen, she is explaining to a policeman why she breached some regulations, she is drinking coffee, she is passing Hsiao-kang on stairs, from whom she once bought a watch. But the film's main character is the city and its alienated inhabitants: there are plenty of people around and yet the characters are somehow outside of their surroundings. And yet the film's ending is pretty ironic: the sentimental song in the last frame rends an entirely different sense to the whole film.

Night and the City by Jules Dassin was specifically selected for the ENH festival by Almodóvar. This film inspired the Spanish master during his work on Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos).
