The winner of this year’s Golden Palm at Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu’s film entitled 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is going to open the 7th IFF ERA NEW HORIZONS on the 19th July.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was one of the most significant events of this year’s Cannes festival. Starting from its first screenings, the film fascinated the festival audience and also the International Jury, who awarded it with the Golden Palm. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days also gained the journalists' enthusiasm and received the International Federation of Film Critics Prize.
The film is set in a cheerless Romanian town during last years of communist reign in Romania. A young woman, Gabita, gets pregnant, but she doesn’t want the baby. She is afraid of being single mother and of her neighbours’ reaction. She decides to have an abortion and her friend offers help. She promises to find someone, who would perform the abortion.
“4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days from the 39-year-old Romanian director, Cristian Mungiu, seems to be the most significant discovery and crowning event of the festival - Tadeusz Sobolewski wrote in the daily Gazeta Wyborcza on 27.05.2007 – Praises for Romanian film in Cannes make us wonder, what is lacking in Polish cinema that it can't be outstanding? Empathy? Focusing on the character? Standing by the character to the very end?”
