Film description

The director, called the Polish Emir Kusturica, chose proven actors and proven motifs: a small, isolated world, idyllic landscapes, and magic realism.

The story is presented distinctly in the film (the plot starts in 1953), but it is a minor element. The director presents the lives of the characters, explaining the origins of their emotions with refined, unforgettable images. He intertwines the film analysis of film art related with recording an obsession with another obsession, equally present in the film: the obsession of lasting, life, and the indestructibility of the world.

When the main character and the soldier meet, this meeting seems to be an excellent illustration of ultimate, ruinous love. The image of such a world can be seen in scenes made with 'Aphonya's camera' - violent, naturalist scenes originate from the real world, but from the character's imagination, too. In Happy Aphonya, one can hear a pessimistic tone in describing the human condition (much stronger than in other films by Kolski): something weird shivering, pulsating beneath the idyllic surface of the beautiful world. What is this pulsation after the war? Isn't it a new disguise of Thanatos? What price do you have to pay to return to what was before? Is it possible at all?
