Born in 1959 in Lisbon. He studied history at the University of Lisbon and editing art at the Lisbon Film School. His debut was the short Cartas a Júlia of 1987. His following films were screened at many festivals and appreciated by jurors, e.g. Bones, shown in Venice in 1997 or In Vanda's Room, awarded in Cannes. His style is characteristically austere with great care paid to realism and details, making his feature films reminiscent of documentaries. Costa speaks mainly about people who have suffered a lot, living on the margin of modern society.
