Angelin Preljocaj, Ballet Preljocaj, Karlheinz Stockhausen

Film description

The first part of the ballet diptych (the second one, Eldorado - Sonntags Abschied is presented in the section documentaries/essays). A confrontation of giants: composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. The German artist was a visionary of 20th century music, author of 313 compositions and 10 volumes of texts on music, e.g. serial music, electric acoustic music, process compositions, intuitive and global music. The Albanian choreographer apparently has no complexes when confronting Stockhausen's sounds - after all Preljocaj was taught by Merce Cunningham and Karin Waehner, he won the Grand Prix National and Victoire de la Musique for Romeo and Juliet (by Prokofiev), and he has re-interpreted Russian ballet in The Wedding and The Rite of Spring (by Stravinsky); he also collaborated with Stockhausen himself on the Helicopter String Quartet. Olivier Assayas's camera records carefully the laborious, tiresome work, single motions, groans, rhythms, moans, compositions, and sighs. Gradually, subsequent layers become visible: costumes, constellations, gestures. The audience can feel the chemistry in the air, although (or maybe because) they can't see the finished performance they only admire the fascinating conversations of the artists, with Stockhausen lecturing on the theory of multi-layer art and Preljocaj adding his impressions and interpretations.

DO YOU KNOW THAT...

Night and the City by Jules Dassin was specifically selected for the ENH festival by Almodóvar. This film inspired the Spanish master during his work on Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos).
