Film description

Budapest, the 1920s. Ede Minarik, a poor laundry-owner, has only one dream - to establish his own football club. He spends all of his money, neglects his family, sacrifices his health and rarely appears at his workplace - and instead of normal activities, he devotes all days to search for talents among the inhabitants of the working-class quarters of Budapest. With admirable persistence, he creates a team and supervises its training, coping with the lack of space and financial means. His aim is the match in which the only star is a talented goalkeeper found for his team.

Sándor Pál's eccentric film in a slapstick comedy convention is now listed among the icons of Hungarian cinematography. The hardly sophisticated plot hides not only impressive staging with visual stylisation for old cinema with boards replacing some dialogues and gags typical for silent cinema, but above all - a colourful portrait of a decadent Budapest after the lost war. Sándor Pál followed the main character to night clubs and quarters of poverty, he carefully reproduces the atmosphere of a fallen city, where Minarik's energy and passion are mixed with the growing melancholy and hopelessness of all other characters.
