Film description

A feature-like impression about countryside life in Hungary. Two photographers come to a far-away village to take portraits of the inhabitants, sometimes overtly and sometimes from hiding. Photographs, even when showing younger villagers, are dominated by old women, melancholically recalling their past, meeting among themselves to contemplate the slow process of the village's death. Although the main characters are invited to countryside parties, they take photos of people dancing, of farmers at work, of local authorities, they keep returning to the same house, where an old lady lives, surrounded by photos of her youth.

Photography is one of the most distinguished pieces in Hungarian cinematography. Somewhere between a feature and documentary, the film is mainly a reflection on memory, which only seemingly can be captured and kept by the photographic medium. In Photography the narrative is loose and rules of the screenplay are just a pretext for the director to create an elusive and intimate atmosphere of passing. First of all, Zolnay explored truth which can be achieved only if we question the surrounding context: customs, ideologies, aesthetics.
