Film description

A film critic, Chris Fujiwara, said about All the Corners of the World: A study of a family of movie-ticket scalpers, provides early drafts of images and situations that will recur in Tsai's films, including a roller-rink scene, motorbike vandalism, an elevator ride in a love hotel, and a mannequin floating in water.

This is true: if we watch this early film by Tsai knowing his most important achievements which came later, we may be surprised by the 'prophetic' occurrence of many of his solutions and ideas. Even the plot itself foreshadows issues Tsai remains faithful to: dysfunctional family, no communication between people, subdued emotions and all set amid the scenery of shopping malls in Taipei. Teenager, Michelle, works hard only to give everything she earns to her mother. Her younger brother roams about with other children, missing school. Their parents sell tickets illegally. There is also a disabled grandfather who needs constant care. This unusually shrewd film is an ordinary, though ghastly, family portrait. This is also a very dynamic narrative - in his later projects, Tsai would reject this style, choosing static minimalism.
